An educational look into the Sawa people's sacred Ngondo Festival celebrated on the Wouri River, highlighting water rituals, traditional contests, and cultural transmission.

In early December, thousands gathered along the banks of the Wouri River in Douala, Cameroon, to observe the traditional Ngondo Festival celebrated by the coastal Sawa people. The festival holds profound spiritual significance, centered on an ancient water immersion ritual where an initiated cultural devotee dives into the river carrying a sacred vase containing the aspirations and prayers of the community. According to Sawa spiritual tradition, the diver encounters the water deities, often referred to as 'mermaids' or water spirits, and retrieves mystical guidance for the people. Beyond the aquatic ceremony, the gathering features vibrant celebrations including traditional wrestling bouts, rhythmic acrobatic dancing, traditional canoe races, and artisan exhibitions. With the festival's inscription onto the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, local community leaders and elders emphasize its crucial role in cultural transmission, preserving indigenous identity, and educating younger generations about their ancestral roots.
