The Sawa community celebrated the first anniversary of the Ngondo Festival's UNESCO recognition with traditional river rituals in Douala.

In December 2025, thousands of people gathered along the banks of the Wouri River in Douala to celebrate the Ngondo Festival. This year's event was particularly significant as it marked the first anniversary of the festival's official inscription on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The Ngondo is a sacred river ritual central to the Sawa community, serving as a profound expression of their cultural identity and spiritual connection to the water. The celebration featured traditional ceremonies, including the carrying of a sacred vase, reinforcing the community's commitment to preserving their heritage for future generations.
