The Sawa community celebrated the first anniversary of the Ngondo Festival's UNESCO recognition, highlighting its importance as a protected intangible cultural heritage through river rituals and traditional performances.

In December 2025, the Sawa community in Douala, Cameroon, celebrated the first anniversary of their iconic Ngondo Festival being inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Thousands of participants gathered along the banks of the Wouri River to witness the sacred river rituals, which serve as a cornerstone of Sawa identity. The festival features traditional dances, elaborate costumes, and the carrying of a sacred vase, symbolizing the community's deep spiritual connection to their heritage. This UNESCO recognition, granted in December 2024, has provided a significant boost to the preservation of Sawa traditions and has encouraged national efforts to protect other vital cultural and natural sites across Cameroon.
